Communication and socialisation

New Technology

Ethical, Moral and Political Issues

Competing theories about communication

This module is about issues in communication and culture - the issues are largely ones which come from the topics you have already studied in Module 5.

For example, Communication and Socialisation looks at whether the process of socialisation is a good thing for us as individuals or not? Is it a necessary evil, causing some individuals to conform when they don't want to but allow society to work happily with everyone in harmony?

The only new information you may learn in this module is the material on New Technology.

Most of this module is about you researching widely from the articles presented here and in your Module 6 booklet and having a good, wide-ranging knowledge of the arguments for and against new technology, socialisation, censorship, surveillance (being watched by the State) etc.

Have a look at some of the questions which have been asked on each of the four topics in the left-hand margin, just to get a feel for how you will have to apply the knowledge you acquire.
