Example 1 Games and Identity

Video clip - link here

Identity and Value Level 4

A very simple, but tight title which brings together a cultural product (video games) with a cultural practice (playing video games) and personal identity. This presentation has real visual and aural presence; once again we see what can be achieved with skilful integration of camera work and voice over commentary.

(AO1)The latter is rich in a technical register, confidently exploring the role that gaming has played in the formation of both a personal and social identity.

(AO3)
The tone of the voice over is persuasive and knowledge is applied with a sense of purpose. The candidate can and does work with some sophisticate concepts. Unsurprisingly, visuals of games dominate the content but the variety of shots, use of graphics and variety in pace maintains interest for the audience.

(AO4) We have here exemplified a very good piece of work working at Level 4 across all Assessment Objectives

Example 2 Actor and Athlete

Powerpoint with music and commentary

This is good work.  Clearly the candidate demonstrates some creativity in incorporating a variety of visual and audio elements to create a narrative.  Some PowerPoint slides have been well designed and with the utilisation of a range of transitions engage and maintain the interest of an audience.  There is a contrast of sound elements too to connote the two contrasting sub-cultures of sport and the theatre.  There is an accompanying written commentary which forms an interesting visual essay.  The work would be strengthened if this had been replaced with a voice over but nonetheless there is a demonstration of a sound application of theory.  Specific reference is made to a variety of sources.

Example 3 Newcastle and Meimage

Powerpoint with music

This is a competent PowerPoint presentation which uses a music soundtrack and a football chant to create an audio element.  The design of the slides is repetitive but there is an attempt to link the selected visuals with an accompanying written commentary.  (AO1)  There is a clear personal response, but this is mainly of a descriptive nature and the candidate needs to demonstrate closer work with the course material.  The chosen key concepts (Identity and Representation) are addressed implicitly as the candidate makes a genuine attempt to present the conflict of being a Newcastle fan that lives in Luton. (AO3) Source material in the form of (AO4)
