There are two contexts for this coursework module - The Person and Cultural Practice.

The Person is about the construction and maintenance of our personal and social identities, and in the ways in which these are communicated. The idea is to explore and investigate issues such as ‘body' image’,‘masculinity/femininity’, ‘bodily adornment’ and ‘body modification’.

Cultural Practice relates to the ‘Meanings and Practices of Everyday Life’. Here, social and cultural ‘rituals’ such as religious/secular festivals, school prize days, a day out to the seaside or shopping are analysed.

For each of those two contexts there will be a topic (which will change each year). For the first year the topic for:

  • the Person context will be Body Modification or Celebrity.
  • the Cultural Practice context will be Cinema-going.

For each topic or issue there will be a list of titles (see separate links in left-hand margin). From this list, you will choose one title upon which the A2 coursework is based. The chosen title is explored in a Case Study (2000 words) and a piece of Creative Work. Bear in mind that this case study is a piece of academic writing in which all sources should be clearly acknowledged. These sources should be identified in a list of references. There is a link to a guide about referencing in the left hand margin or click here.

You must select one of the titles set.
You are not allowed to make up alternative titles or change the ones which are set in any way. However, each title will leave plenty of room for your individual interpretation. You are encouraged to think for yourself and express yourself in an individual way. In your response to a chosen title you are required to use and apply the theoretical perspectives and key concepts of Unit 3 and Unit 1 (critical social theory, feminism, postmodernism etc and aspects of culture - high/popular).

For examples of the sorts of titles you might be set, click on the links in the left-hand margin. The Exam Board have also included a list of references for each topic in their guide on the AQA website - click here
