There is no word limit on this section. The section is worth 15 marks.

In this section you need to show evidence of the drafting of your artefact, decisions about content included, graphics, colour, register of language, font, layout, illustrations etc.

Evidence means examples of the artefact at various stages of development, with technical commentary, as you did in the Preparation phase of your oral portfolio.

You also need to show evidence of evaluative decision-making using a sample (6-10 people) of your target audience to help inform your decisions.  See example of drafting and consultation in the appendix at the end of the section.

Final decisions should be based on understanding and application of communications theory - use the knowledge and skills you acquired on the Texts and Meanings paper to justify how you have chosen to communicate.

YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE PAGES and PAGES OF FONTS, COLOURS, FOLDING LEAFLETS ETC IN THIS SECTION.

You have already RESEARCHED format and this section is USING the findings so there is no need for exploration of formats again in this section.

YOU are the Communications expert –

  • Discuss what the research told you about fonts, colours etc and show a SELECTED range which fit in with these findings. Perhaps mention whether the audience agreed with these findings.
  • Draw up several mock-ups based on your research findings – two or three alternatives in terms of colour, layout etc but based on best design principles.
  • Write an analysis of your mock ups explaining what you think each is communicating to the audience – as you did in your Module 2 paper last year.
  • Consult your audience and compare their comments to your own thinking.
  • Make any amendments and discuss how they change the communication of your artefact.

Examples of Drafting

music images This student has included in her drafting section a paradigm of the possible images for her artefact which was a flyer, to advertise a music festival. She had already narrowed down the possible images in her Research section to symbols and photos and the fact that they needed to be in colour.

Her next step would be to combine the possible fonts and slogans she had selected, into several 'mock ups'. Advertising agencies will research their client and target audiences needs and produce several ideas based on this.

After feedback from client (commissioner) and target audience a final draft is drafted.

Three mock-ups for a band flyer for The Response.
Note that each mock up has been analysed semiotically and comments and feedback from commissioner and target audience are included in bullet points underneath.

After consultation, this student produced a final draft band flyer, based on best/most desired elements of the three mock-ups above. She submitted the final draft for final consultation and then produced her final artefact.
